Camp FAQs

Intermediate and Advanced 5 day camps follow the same basic structure, with a total of eight sessions over five days. There are three days with morning and afternoon sessions (water or land) with a break for lunch, and two half-days.  At least six of the eight sessions will be on the water. The other topics covered during the camp can be surf theory, training plans, cross training, nutrition, racing and in depth technique work.

The flexibility is to allow for variations in the weather, paddling ability and desired outcomes to determine the final curriculum.

Custom camps will depend on your group goals and ability, are structured similar to the above and could look like this:

Four day camps are typically five sessions on the water, and two sessions theory and dry land.

Three day camps are typically four – five sessions on the water, one-two dry land sessions.

The Fundamentals camp takes place over two days, with four sessions together. We will do a morning and afternoon paddling session each day with a lunch break during which we will talk about paddling theory.

While the focus of the Fundamentals camp is on foundational skills for OC1, such as balance, ama flying, remounting after a huli, paddling stroke and training basics, depending on the level of the group, we may also do a downwind run.

This is a great camp for Oahu local paddlers and perfect for a small group of your paddling pals. The level of this camp will be adjusted to match the groups ability.

You must already be an OC1 paddler. This is not a course for first time paddlers.

The technique tune up is a packed day of practicing, tweaking and reconnection your technical foundation. We will do a morning and afternoon paddling session and have a picnic lunch where the learning continues.

You will get a head to toe to finger tip review of the stroke and leave with the ability to continue to apply what you have learned.

Each paddler will be given personal tips and be mentored on how to continue to move forward with their paddling progression.  This class is repeatable.

You must already be an OC1 paddler. You may be at the beginning of your OC1 paddling, but this is not a course for first time paddlers.

We will be based out of Kailua, Oahu, but we’ll drive to wherever the best (downwind) conditions are. Typically we will be along the south shore and windward side of Oahu from Sand Island, to Waikiki, Hawaii Kai, Waimanalo and Kailua.

5 day camp costs $1,250 per person
2 day FUNdamentals camp costs $500 per person
1 day Technique tune up costs $250 per person

Prices exclude local taxes and are based on groups of 4-5 people in a camp. Camp fee includes coaching, canoes, video,  and handouts.  You will go away with a wealth of knowledge!

Please fill out the application form linked here, I will review and reach out to you to answer any further questions and make sure this camp is a good fit for you.

I have labeled the camps Advanced, Intermediate and FUNdamentals to help facilitate creating groups of paddlers with similar paddling ability.

If you aren’t sure which camp is right for you I will help you determine that.I speak with each person who is interested in coming to camp to make sure that they are signing up for the right camp for them.

The only group I do not accommodate at this time is first-time and beginner paddlers. If you are new to paddling, you can contact me using this form here and I will be happy to talk with you about what steps you can take to get started.

I will provide canoes for use during camp hours. Currently we are using Pueo Gen I, Gen II, Pueo X and Kikaha OC2. I use the OC2 as a coaching and teaching tool and everyone will rotate through paddling the OC2 with me.

If you live on Oahu and prefer to use your own canoe, please let me know.

You need to bring your paddle, hydration system, at least 2 sets of paddling clothes, sunglasses that are secure, a hat, sunscreen and water shoes.

If you normally wear a life jacket you need to bring your own.

I will provide OC1’s and leashes for the canoes.

Sometimes to facilitate efficient use of time and more paddling we will use a shuttle or a driver to do downwind runs to be more efficient with time. A shuttle-driven downwind run costs $10 per person.

You will need to bring your own lunch. I will provide a cooler to keep it in. However, each camp is different and we may sometimes decide to buy lunch instead of packing lunch. You’ll be part of that decision.

You will need to plan your own accommodation. I highly recommend staying on the Windward side of Oahu, as this will be our base, but you can stay anywhere you like on Oahu. Most people stay around Waikiki, Hawaii Kai, Waimanalo, Kailua and Kaneohe. When searching for house rentals in Kailua, use Zip Code 96734.

You’ll need to be able to get yourself to the daily launch location and I suggest renting a car.

It is also possible to get around Oahu using UBER, Lyft, Taxis or The Bus depending on where you are staying. Let me know if you have questions.

On occasion, camp attendees have gotten together to share a rental car. You can let me know if this is of interest to you.

Camp days tend to be long, especially when we are doing double sessions that include a downwind run and the logistics of dropping off and picking up cars. These logistics take time, so anyone not paddling with you will need to be very patient and not expect to see you by a specific time in the evening.

Camp days can be tiring, and to get the most out of camp it’s beneficial to focus on refueling, taking care of your body, and plenty of sleep when the day is over. You may not be the best company for your friends or family!
